Dubai to have QE2 New Royal Attraction

The most famous ocean liner currently in operation is soon to be heading to a permanent home in Dubai. Cunard recently announced that is selling the Queen Elizabeth II to Dubai World for US $100 million. The QE2 will become a first class tourist destination anchored at The Palm Jumeirah, the island development in the shape of a palm tree.

According to news reports, including from the BBC , the iconic liner will be delivered to Dubai in November 2008 and will cease being an ocean going passenger vessel. She will be refurbished and berthed at a specially constructed pier off the Palm islands.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, chairman of Dubai World, is excited about the prospect of having the great liner at home in Dubai:

“QE2 is without a doubt one of the wonders of the maritime world, and is easily the most famous serving liner in the world today. I am delighted we will be able to create a home for her on the newest wonder of the world, The Palm Jumeirah.

“Dubai is a maritime nation and we understand the rich heritage of QE2.  She is coming to a home where she will be cherished.”

At the Palm Jumeriah, the QE2 will serve as a luxury hotel, retail and entertainment destination. Istithimar, the investment arm of Dubai World that made the purchase, is hoping to recreate the original interior of the ship and establish a museum showing its history. The ship was launched in 1967 and is the longest serving vessel in Cunard’s history. It has crossed the Atlantic more than 800 times and served over 2.5 million passengers in its lifetime.
